9th OCM Annual Events Seminar 2009

The 9th OCM Annual Events Seminar 2009 was held on 25th July 2009 at the Conference Room, Level 2, OCM Indoor Sports Complex, Wisma OCM.

Mr. Bob Kemp, of Astro presented a paper on the soon to be launched, new local sports initiative on the Family Package of ASTRO under the name of ASTRO ARENA. In his briefing, he stated that ASTRO ARENA would be 4 channels in one, broadcasting mainly in Bahasa Malaysia and aimed primarily to viewers aged 10-40 and to deliver 700 hours of live, local sport a year with an extra 2000 hours replays to allow more people to watch local sport. There would also be an average of 56 hours a week of Malaysians playing sport at International levels. He said that subject to contract negotiations, in the next 18 months, Astro Arena would be showing young Malaysians competing in the SEA Games, the Commonwealth and Asian Games and the Youth Olympics in Singapore.

Mr. Bob Kemp added that Astro Arena would build and operate Malaysia’s first and only 7 day a week local sports newsroom offering up to 5 live bulletins a day with some extra weekend and late night replays. The Bulletins would have a roundup of international sport and longer form of highlights and interviews when warranted. The latest results would eventually be visible across the bottom of the screen on the ‘Arena Sports Ticker’

He said that the schedule would feature appointment viewing at 8:30 most nights with extended previews, reviews, highlights and discussion programming to build the interest in Malaysian local sporting heroes. Viewers would be encouraged to ‘Get into the Game’ with an extensive ‘Sport for All’ initiative developed with the OCM and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, using some of Malaysia’s best athletes.

He stated that OCM and Astro have signed the MOU prior to entering into a Strategic Alliance as the backbone to the Channel’s success. Astro wished to cover as many major regional, national and state level events as was possible. Astro obviously could not cover everything but if the National Sports Associations (NSAs) were to schedule more than one match or tournament at the same time, some could be recorded for delayed telecast.

Mr. Bob Kemp stated that Astro would support the NSAs’ existing naming right and ground sponsors by offering them attractive on-air packages as a first option to be involved in the Channel. Astro Arena would be looking for several ‘foundation sponsors’ to help launch the Channel. Before Astro committed to any broadcast Astro would sign a Licensing Agreement with the NSAs that would include an offer to assist with any International exploitation of the NSAs’ events for mutual benefit. Other events would be covered as news items and some as extended highlights in Astro’s magazine support programming but only if Astro knew about the events.

Mr. Bob Kemp stated that he had already started investigating a new calendar database that would allow every NSA to input their events or provide details for the OCM to input, which would avoid too many clashes between major events across the calendar. Eventually, Astro hoped the calendar would be available via the internet down to a state level for the individual fan to see what is on in their area.

Astro has an on-line and mobile presence – Stadiumastro.com that would include news, chat, blogs, commentator columns, results and user generated content from local and international sport. There would be ‘click thru’ visibility to the NSAs’ web sites and Astro would eventually build a community on-line presence that the NSAs could use if they do not support a website now. So the commitment is not just to a Channel but to a whole community of local sports fans across Malaysia.

Once Astro and OCM had determined a Launch Date, there would be a signing ceremony and press announcement about Astro Arena, which would be by the end of the year. Astro’s commitment is very big, such as the need to build new studios, a newsroom, engage the best talent and crew and purchase 2 new OB trucks to cover all the sport.

Mr. Bob Kemp stressed that sports events Calendar would be imperative to the success of the Channel. This was where NSAs’ help was required to keep the OCM continually updated on the NSAs’ events and timetable. Astro would be looking for results, news and feedback. A local sports channel is nothing without content and the NSAs have to provide all the content.

To support the NSAs and to build Astro Arena into the best local sports outlet in Malaysia, a number of marketing, promotional and stadium events would be conducted each year. Astro would work with the NSAs to develop new properties that could be jointly promoted. Astro would employ some Arena Ambassadors – key national sporting heroes - to help launch the Channel and send the Arena Angels Cheerleaders to add jest and excitement to selected events.

Mr. Bob Kemp concluded his talk by saying that Astro Arena would support the NSAs if the NSAs were to support Astro Arena, so as to jointly celebrate Malaysian sport to make the Malaysian team the viewers ‘home team’.

YAM Tunku Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, thanked Mr. Bob Kemp for his briefing and appealed to the NSAs to make use of the opportunities of Astro Arena, to promote and develop their sports and at the same time increase the revenue potential of their sports. He stressed the importance of early planning and preparation of their events calendar so as to allow Astro Arena sufficient time to plan their life-broadcast programme. He stated that Astro Arena would benefit the efficient and hardworking NSAs more, and it was therefore important for all NSAs to become more efficient and plan and organise more exciting and attractive competitions.

Famemas, Singapore Badminton Open Report

Famemas Club of KL and Selangor rocks Singapore at the Aviva Singapore Open Badminton Super Series 2009!

The official Sports Supporters Club of Malaysia, Famemas Club KL and Selangor, organized a trip to cheer for our Malaysian national shuttlers at the recent Aviva Singapore Open Badminton Super Series on Saturday 13-Sunday 14 June 2009.The trip went ahead as scheduled, despite the defeat of the Malaysian shuttlers at the Quarterfinal stage on Friday.

20 members participated in this annual trip, although it was hoped that more members would have participated. The delegation departed from Plaza Sentral, near KL Sentral, in the wee hours of the morning. Participants stayed at Madras Hotel in the heart of the City.

Apart from being in the Singapore Indoor Stadium for the Semifinal matches, participants also spent time sightseeing at Esplanade and Clarke Quay, where group photos were taken. We also went on a City Tour along the route where the Formula One race was held. In the morning, members were dropped at Orchard Road district where they did some shopping.

The journey home was not a boring one, as the participants enjoyed themselves with karaoke singing, watching a movie and a video of past Famemas trips abroad, and of course, plenty of camaraderie through jokes. Mansor entertained all with his evergreen and off the cuff jokes. Although the journey back to KL was fraught with traffic jam, it was nevertheless a tiring but enjoyable trip for all those who attended.

As the Organising Committee Chairman, Dorairaj, aptly put it,’ I brought my daughter to the trip to fill up the coach, and to see her enjoying herself, really, really made my day.’

Famemas Club would like to thank its sponsors, Sunway City Bhd and Land and General Bhd for its generous contribution towards the success of the trip. And not forgetting the loyal supporters who despite not cheering their favorite stars in action, still made the trip in the spirit of sheer sportsmanship.

Peng Soon-Khim Wah juarai GP Emas Thailand

Nicol Raih Pingat Emas Skuasy Sukan Dunia

Manchester United To Play Second Match In Malaysia On Monday

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 After a superb opening match of the 2009 Asia Tour series, the English Premier League champion, Manchester United will play a second match in Malaysia.

"They will once again play against the Malaysian Selection at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil at 8.45pm on Monday," chief executive officer of ProEvents Julian Kam said at a press conference, here, Saturday night.

"Looking at the tremendous reception the team received in Malaysia and the capacity crowd tonight, we believe that many fans would be eager to watch the team play once again.

"A second match will be given to fans who missed out to watch the players in action today. It will also give the Malaysian players another chance to play against Manchester United," Kam added.

Kam said with the current tense situation in Jakarta, the team had decided to cancel their trip there for safety reasons.

"Visitors from the UK who bought tickets to watch the match in Indonesia can bring their tickets to us and exchange them to get new tickets to watch the match on Monday.

"For fans in Indonesia who bought the tickets for the Jakarta match, they too can exchange their tickets to watch the match in Kuala Lumpur," said Kam.

According to him, the match organiser had arranged 3,000 seats in the National Stadium to be allocated to these fans.

"Although we have arranged 3,000 seats for those who bought tickets for the Jakarta match, we are expecting a bigger turnout on Monday," he added.

He said there will only be two types of tickets sold for the match on Monday, comprising RM308 for grandstand and RM58 for free seating.

Tickets can be purchased from ticket counters from Sunday onwards, starting at 12 noon, he said.

Narrow Defeat Due To No Fear Mentality: Rajagopal

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 The narrow 2-3 defeat by the Malaysian side against Manchester United was a result of a 'no fear mentality' instilled among his players said coach K. Rajagobal, Saturday.

"After undergoing several weeks of training at the Trafford Training Centre in Carrinton (Manchester United's official training ground) several years ago, Sir Bobby Charlton always focused on "No Fear In Football" which has motivated my style of management," he said.

Despite the English Premier Champion scoring two quick goals through Wayne Rooney and Nani in the first-half, the Malaysian side, made up of mainly Under-23 players, showed a great deal of determination in the match.

"During the first-half break, I told the players to play with urgency in the second half. I also told them that there should be no fear in football, even when facing a formidable side like Manchester United," said Rajagobal, who admitted that changing too many players when the score was tied 2-2, had changed the complexion of the match and outcome.

"We made too many changes and that cost us the match when newly signed striker Micheal Owen scored the winner," he said.

Nevertheless, Rajagobal was happy with his side's performance.

"In the rematch on Monday, the narrow defeat will further motivate them to perform even better than today," said Rajagobal who is expected to maintain the same line-up.

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was awed by the speed, open play and enthusiasm displayed by the Malaysian side.

"It was nice when we were leading 2-0 early in the first half but were surprised by Malaysia's first goal. Then, into the second half, I noticed that Malaysian players were more determined and played with high enthusiasm, particularly, in ball possession," said Ferguson or fondly known as Fergie.

The tour is the Carling Cup and World Cup Club champions' fourth trip to Malaysia, after 1991, 1995 and 2001 when they hammered a Malaysian side 6-0.

Asked about the Malaysian team's improved performance, Alex said: "Absolutely, it has improved since the last tour and that is good."

MU Letak Barisan Mantap Tentang Pilihan Malaysia

Malaysia juara Remaja Asia

"Iskandar menunjukkan kemajuan berbanding dua hari lalu.

"Seperti menentang Jepun, kami masih mengharapkan mata apabila menghadapi China menerusi beregu campuran dan kesemua lelaki kerana pemain wanita kita masih lemah.

PSM perlu bersikap terbuka

Cuma, kata orang, jangan kita merancang membuta tuli.

Zimbabwe bukan hantar skuad utama ?

Indra juga patut menyalah diri sendiri kerana gagal menjaringkan gol awal apabila sepakan kaki kirinya jauh tersasar ketika pintu gol terbuka luas dua minit kemudian.
