World Badminton: Chong Wei, Mew Choo Cruise Through To Second Round

HYDERABAD, Aug 10 Top Malaysian shuttlers Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Wong Mew Choo easily crushed their opponents on the first day of the Yonex-Sunrise World Badminton Championship on Monday but Lee Tsuen Seng was toppled.

In the men's singles, Chong Wei, who took on Germany's Dieter Domke, wasted no time to dispose him 21-14, 21-10 in 25 minutes.

"It was my first match, I made some mistakes. My last match was in the same court and it was still playing on my mind (knocked out of India Open in the first match in March this year). There was some pressure during the start but I should be okay in the next round," Chong Wei told reporters after the game.

Mew Choo had an easy first game against Shannon Pohl from the United States, defeating her 21-4, 21-6 in just 19 minutes.

But it was rather a shock early exit for another single's player Lee Tsuen Seng who was beaten by Thailand's Saensomboonsuk Tanongsak 7-21, 13-21.

Malaysia recorded another defeat in the mixed doubles when Woon Khe Wei and Mohd Razif Abdul Latif lost to Ukraine pair Valeriy Atrashchenkov and Elena Prus 17-21, 17-21.

Malaysian women's doubles pair Lim Yin Loo-Marylen Ng Poau Leng also lost to Japan's Shizuka Matsuo-Mami Naito 8-21, 16-21.

Meanwhile, of other favourites who took the court today, Denmark's Peter Hoeg Gade had an easy ride -- he outplayed Ukraine's Valeriy Atrashchenko 21-11, 21-16.

Defending champion Lin Dan brushed aside Israel's Zilberman 21-9, 21-11.

Netherland's Dicky Palyama created the tournament's first upset when he edged 11th-seeded Chinese Bao Chun Lai in the men's singles.
