A group of Malaysian supporters are planning a cheer mission to 16th Guangzhou Asian Games from Sat 20 to Sun 28 Nov 2010. This will be their third Asian Games mission after Busan Asian Games 2002 and Doha Asian Games 2006.
Chairman of Famemas Club Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Lee Hui Seng says, ‘Although the number of supporters going are relatively small this time, nevertheless we plan to harness the strength of the Malaysian Contingent by gathering Malaysians residing in Guangzhou, Malaysian Embassy staff, other supporters, athletes and officials to provide the much needed cheer to stimulate the performance of our athletes.’
‘Our Group likes to attend multi-sports events like Asian Games and SEA Games because it provides an avenue to witness as many sports as possible within the one week time frame. Now we are extending our courteous invitation to all patriotic and sports loving Malaysians to join us in this worthwhile mission and ‘National Service.’ He added.
The pun of the mission, aptly named GAG, is intended as their catchy mission code in their aim to provide moral and vocal support to the national athletes featuring in the Games.
He was speaking at a Hari Raya Dinner organised by the club and Press Launch of Famemas Club Guangzhou Asian Games mission at Bagan Seafood Restaurant in Port Klang on 9 October 2010, which was attended by sponsors, sports personalities, media and members.
The Club started preparations for the trip since the Thomas Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur in May 2010. This is the 8th year in operation for the club, which has counted to its credit, the SEA Games in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam 2003, SEA Games in Manila,Phillipines 2005, SEA Games in Korat,Thailand 2007 and SEA Games in Ventianne,Laos 2009.
During the stint, supporters will be shuttling from stadium to stadium during the 8 day cheer trip, cheering on our athletes in sports such as badminton, squash, taekwondo, hockey, athletics, karate, rhythimic gymnastics, sepak takraw, soccer, archery, bowling and diving. The group will cover up to 4 sports per day, in accordance with wishes of the Malaysian Chef De Mission and Malaysian Secretariat there.
‘We hope our athletes will perform up to expectations and of course we will be there to support them in their times of need.As we expect most of the competition venues to be filled to capacity with the Chinese crowd and even if we do not get into the stadiums to cheer our heroes, we will still be staying around the public areas to foster friendship with fans from other countries and make our presence felt in promoting Malaysian tourism’ Lee added.
There will also be some time allocated for members to relax and unwind as they will be taken to several sight seeing places of interest.
