3rd Malaysian International Basketball Championships 2010 –

The 3rd Malaysian International Basketball Championship 2010 was held in the Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA) Stadium from 25th to 27rd November 2010. After three days of exiting Basketball competitions, the following are the results:
Men’s Section
Champion – Chinese Taipei Clouded Leopard
Runner-Up – Australian Alphablast Western Tigers
Third place – Malaysian National Team
Fourth place – Guangxi, China Basketball Team
Women’s Section
Champion – Chinese Taipei Fo Guang University Women’s Basketball Team
Runner-Up – Malaysian National Women’s Team
Third place – Guang Dong Women’s Youth Basketball Team
Fourth place – Singapore National Women’s Basketball Team

3rd World Junior Wushu Championship 2010 –

Malaysia will be participating in the 3rd World Juniot Wushu Championship from 2nd to 10th December 2010 at Jurong Sports and Cultural Centre, Singapore. The Championship will be held under 3 age groups. Group A for athletes between the ages of 16 years to 18 years, Group B for athletes between the ages of 13 to 15 years and Group C for athletes between the ages of 7 to 12 years. The Malaysian Contingent comprises the following athletes:

8th Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf 2010

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is organizing the 8th OCM – Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf for the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund at the Saujana Golf and Country Club, Subang on 1st December 2010, from 7.00 a.m. A total of 33 teams, including a number of teams from affiliates of OCM have signed up for the Charity Golf.

The objectives of the charity golf are to raise funds for the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund and to encourage interaction between the various National Sports Associations (NSAs), raising the profile of OCM through the organisation of the Charity Golf and also in memory of the late Tan Sri Alex Lee for his tremendous contribution to the nation and sport.

To date, twenty six (26) sportsmen have been given scholarships from the Education Fund. Among them are national athletes, Beh Shun Ting, and Faris Almas-Lee Rosmanizam, who participated in the recent Guangzhou 16th Asian Games in Women’s Beach Volleyball and Cricket, respectively. Beh Shun Ting partnering Luk Teck Hua, in Women’s Beach Volleyball achieved the best ever performance by a Malaysian pair in Women’s Beach Volleyball in an Asian Games by finishing 4th and narrowly missing out a bronze medal. Faris Almas-Lee Rosmanizam was a member of the Malaysian Cricket team which defeated China, but lost to Bangladesh, the gold medalist of the 16th Asian Games.

This year, the following three (3) national athletes will be awarded the study grants:
Ms. Tan Hui Tien , who represented Malaysia in DanceSport at the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 and is presently studying for her A Level in TAR College, Mr. Lau Xiu Qiang (Table Tennis), who is taking a Sports Science in University of Malaya and Ms. Chiu Soo Jiin (Table Tennis), who is taking up Bachelor of Business course at the Help University College

Guangzhou 16th Asian Games 2010

Congratulations to the Malaysian Contingent, the Chef de Mission, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Zolkples Embong and all those who have assisted in the success of the Malaysian Contingent, for the excellent performance at the Guangzhou 16th Asian Games, by achieving the target of 9 gold medals and also winning 18 silver medals and 14 bronze medals to finish in 10th position.

The Guangzhou 16th Asian Games concluded on 27th November 2010, with another fantastic show at the Closing Ceremony. At the end of the Games, 36 NOCs out of 45 NOCs won medals, with 29 NOCs winning at least 1 gold medal, with 4 NOCs winning silver and bronze medals and 3 NOCs winning bronze medals only. At the Doha 2006 Asian Games 36 NOCs won medals, but 26 NOCs won gold medals, 8 NOCs won silver and bronze medals and 4 NOCs won only bronze medals, while at the Busan 2002 Asian Games, 39 NOCs won medals, with 27 NOCs winning gold medals, 4 NOCs winning silver medals and 8 NOCs winning bronze medals. Thus for the last three Asian Games, the results have been quite consistent, with 80% of the NOCs winning medals, and 57% of the NOCs winning gold medals.

Table 1 below shows the Breakdown of gold medal tally by Region for the last 6 Asian Games. It also shows the increase of the number of gold medals from 1990 (310) to 2010 (477), an increase of almost 54% over a period of 20 years. From the Doha 2006 Asian Games to the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games, there is an increase of gold medals by 11%. Table 1 also shows that over the last 6 Asian Games, the East Asian Region has been consistently winning around 70% or more of the gold medals, with the highest at the Beijing 1990 Asian Games (92.90%) and the lowest at the Doha 2006 Asian Games (69.39%). As for the other 4 regions, the South Asia region is the weakest, winning around 3% of the medals, with the other 3 regions winning on an average 8% of the gold medals.

14th National Olympic Academy Session for Young Sports Leaders 2011

The 14th National Olympic Academy Session for Young Sports Leaders, organised by the National Olympic Academy of Malaysia will be held from 25th to 30th January 2011 at Wisma OCM, Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur. Affiliates of OCM are requested to nominate their representatives, to attend the above Session. The best Malaysian male and female participant will be selected to represent Majlis Olimpik Malaysia to attend the International Olympic Academy Session to be held in Olympia, Greece, in June/July 2011.

All members of OCM are encouraged to nominate candidates to attend the 14th National Olympic Academy Session for Young Sports Leaders 2011.

47th Malaysian Table Tennis Championships 2010

The 47th Malaysian Table Tennis Championships 2010, will be held from 20th to 23rd December 2010, at Dewan S.M. (C) Pay Fong, Kg. Ampat, Melaka. A total of 16 Men’ States teams and 13 Women’s States teams, comprising a total of about 200 players will be competing in the following 7 events, Men’s Team. Women’s Team, Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.


OCM’s Relationship with BFM 89.9FM

Following regular contacts between OCM Media Committee (Encik Chris Syer) and BFM 89.9FM, the Radio Station has agreed to broadcast news from OCM/NSAs in their weekly programme – “Sports Un-illustrated” - hosted by Ross Yusoff on Sundays from 10.00am to 12 Noon. NSAs are requested to make contact with Encik Chris Syer, a member of the OCM Media Committee by e-mail <> or mobile 012 3895950, and provide details of up-coming events and personalities that the NSAs would like to feature on the BFM 89.9FM “Sports Un-illustrated” programme.
