XIX Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010

The Delhi XIX Commonwealth Games 2010, was successfully concluded with a spectacular Closing Ceremony on 14th October 2010. Contrary to the doomsayers prediction of a badly organized XIX Commonwealth Games, the Organising Committee of the XIX Commonwealth Games managed to turn things around to organized one of the best Commonwealth Games to date.

The Commonwealth Games Association of Malaysia (Olympic Council of Malaysia), never had any doubts that the XIX Commonwealth Games would not be a resounding success. The CGA of Malaysia wishes to congratulate the Organising Committee of the XIX Commonwealth Games for their success and to thank them for their warm hospitality. The CGA of Malaysia wishes to congratulate the CGA of India for the outstanding performance of their athletes by winning 38 gold medals and a total of 101 medals, thereby achieving their best medal tally in the history of their participation in the Commonwealth Games.

The Malaysian Contingent, under the able leadership of the Chef de Mission, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Abdul Halil surpassed the target of 10 gold medals. By winning 12 gold medals, thus achieving the most number of gold medals won in a Commonwealth Games. The previous best was 10 gold medals at the Kuala Lumpur 1998 Commonwealth Games. The 36 medals won, comprising 12 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 14 bronze medals, equaled the best total medals won in the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

All the Malaysian athletes performed their best and a number of them, who were participating in Delhi for exposure, out-did themselves by winning medals. A few athletes who were tipped to win medals, but did not, were not due to lack of trying or effort, but more to their opponents’ luck and also them performing beyond expectations. Rhythmic Gymnast, Elaine Koon, who was not expected to win a gold medal, surprised all Malaysians by being the top medal winner, with 5 individual medals, 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze. Pandalela Rinong was also outstanding winner 1 gold and 1 silver medal in Platform diving. Dato’ Nicol David finally won the Squash gold medal. For the men athletes, weightlifter Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim made a successful come-back to regain the gold medal in the 56 Kg. which he won at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, but was unable to participate in the 2006 Commonwealth Games due to suspension. Josiah Ng, although some would consider him as being lucky, was in a position to win the gold medal in the Keirin cycling event for Malaysia, when team mate Azizul Hasni Awang, the initial winner, was controversially disqualified. As expected, the Badminton team played well to win 4 of the 6 gold medals in contention. Unfortunately the women players could not win a gold medal at this Games, but won a silver medal through Wong Mew Choo, who put up a gallant display against the home-crowd favourite, in the womens’ singles final.

The CGA of Malaysia and the Malaysian Contingent wish to thank the Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi, in particular H.E. Dato’ Tan Seng Sung, as well as his staff, for their close monitoring of the situation in Delhi and providing the Malaysian Contingent, up-to-date status reports as well as advice. The CGA of Malaysia should also congratulate YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Tuanku Ja’afar, the Vice President and Chair of the Sports Committee of the CGF and Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. M. Jegathesan, Honorary Medical Adviser of the CGF, for the confident and quiet manner they carried out their duties in advising, supporting, encouraging, and managing the sports and the medical (including doping) aspects, respectively, of the XIX Commonwealth Games.

OCM Highlights

There seems to be some misunderstanding over the contribution and submission of articles for publication in the OCM Highlights. As everyone is aware, the OCM Highlights is an internet weekly newsletter, distributed to affiliates of OCM, the media, supporters, sponsors, staff, the IOC, CGF and OCA. Any sports organizations, including the affiliates of OCM and individuals could submit their articles and reports for publication in the OCM Highlights and credit is always given to the writer. The objective of the Highlights is to inform the media and the affiliates of OCM, some details of coming events and also some reports of past events.

As such it is the duty and responsibility of the people who organized their events to submit brief reports of their events to OCM for publication in the OCM Highlights. If no report is submitted by the organizers, then it is not the fault of OCM if their reports are not published. Some organizers take lots of pain to go into the house-keeping matters, which are normally carried out by the staff of OCM, but they neglect or are not interested to even provide a brief report of their events on their conclusion.

The affiliates of OCM that often submit reports of their events are the Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation, the Ice Skating Association of Malaysia, the Malaysian Handball Federation, and a few others. OCM welcomes and appeal to its affiliates to submit reports of their events for inclusion in the OCM Highlights.
