The Dexion Ice Hockey League (February – May 2010)

The “Dexion Ice Hockey League” finals on Saturday, 29 May 2010 held at Sunway Pyramid ice rink capped a five-month journey of hard work, dedication and sheer determination for some. In the end, the victors and their opponents shared the stage to thank all sponsors, the organizing committee and volunteers involved.

The previous night had produced the longest game, regular season and playoffs, in Division 3 history when the Dexion Slayers-Metro Stars playoff game surpassed the five-minute OT and went into two rounds of shootout. The winner, Dexion Slayers, moved on to meet Dexion Wildcubs in the finals but the better team prevailed as Wildcubs clinched the title with a 4-1 win.

For the Division 2 finals, it was Warriors against a familiar foe, Vipers. After last season’s heart-breaking loss in the finals, Warriors were determined to reclaim the title. They kept their cool despite Vipers coming from behind to tie the game at four goals apiece and hung on to win 5-4 in OT.

When the big boys took the ice, the crowd already was anticipating for more. The back-and-forth took place for both evenly matched teams but the KL Cobras found the extra gear needed to get the job done.

Former Prime Minister YABhg. Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and AirAsia’s Y.Bhg. Dato’ Seri Tony Fernandes presented the trophies for Divisions 3 and 2, respectively and congratulated the teams on a job well done.
The awards ceremony took place at the Cobra Club in Petaling Jaya on Sunday, 30 May 2010 with MIHF President Y.Bhg. Datuk Lee Hwa Beng and Dexion Asia’s Mr. Frank Johnstone handing out the medals. A light dinner was served beforehand, allowing the players, parents, volunteers and family time to relax and mingle.

The 130-strong crowd cheered on as the winners of special awards were announced. Goodbyes and hugs were exchanged, with talks of the next season already underway.

The Dexion Ice Hockey league is organized by the Malaysia Ice Hockey Federation.
