The Queen’s Baton Relay is a tradition of the Commonwealth Games, which was started at the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales. Since then it has been held during every Games. The Queen’s Baton Relay is held in all the 71 member Commonwealth Games Associations thus providing an opportunity for them to celebrate a little of the Commonwealth Games in their own country. The 2010 Queen’s Baton Relay carries a message from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth to Delhi, where it will be taken out from the Baton and read to the athletes at the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Creating a sustainable legacy of the Commonwealth Games 2010 Environment Programme – Simultaneous tree planting exercise on 12th June 2010 in Kuala Lumpur at18.00 hr, New Delhi at 15.30 hr and London at 11.00 hr.
The Organising Committee, Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games (OC-CWG) has launched a programme for establishing the first ever Green Commonwealth Games with a Green vision of “Striving towards reducing the carbon footprint becoming the benchmark for all multi-disciplinary games in the future.”

To implement the programme OC-CWG has initiated a pan-India tree planting exercise, which is to be conducted in conjunction with the domestic leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay. However, taking into account the global scope of the climate change issue, the OC-CWG envisaged that this Green movement spreads beyond boundaries and across nations of the Commonwealth.

To further deliver upon the above commitment, the OC-CWG organized with the Olympic Council of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, a simultaneous tree planting exercise on Saturday, 12th June 2010, in the cities of Kuala Lumpur at 6.00 p.m., London at 11.00 a.m. and New Delhi at 3.30 p.m..

The objective to conduct the exercise simultaneously at all three cities is to establish the first of a kind, ‘Green Link’. In London, the tree to be planted is within the Commonwealth Headquarters, i.e. Marlborough House, in Delhi in the compound of the Commonwealth Games Association of India and in Kuala Lumpur in the front part of Wisma OCM, the Building of the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

The tree planting ceremony in Kuala Lumpur was held at 6.00 p.m. Malaysian time on 12th June 2010, in the front part of the Olympic Sports Hotel at Wisma OCM, the home of the Olympic Council of Malaysia. YBhg. Prof. Dato Ar. W. Y. Chin, Vice President of OCM and Ms. Pooja Kapur Counsellor (Press, Information, Culture & Community Affairs). High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur, planted the tree.
