The Dato’ Arthur Tan Chess Centre

In downtown Kuala Lumpur, located on the 4th Floor of Kompleks Wilayah at No. 2 Jalan Munshi Abdullah, is the Dato’ Arthur Tan Chess Centre, which is part of an ambitious chess undertaking to provide a home-away-from-home for all Malaysian players and foreign chess visitors.

The Centre, which opened this past February, is both a revved-up chess engine that currently holds Kuala Lumpur Commercial Chess League matches and a friendly social location with a coffeehouse atmosphere. Local coaches frequently hold clinics for their students, and there will soon be a top international grandmaster as an onsite chess coach for players ranging from novices to those seeking international titles. The Centre has already hosted numerous tournaments, including the 2009 National Closed Chess Championship, the 2009 Royal Selangor Open, the 1st National Senior Chess Championship and so on.

Everyone is invited to visit the Centre, play a few games of chess, or simply sit around reading a magazine or newspaper. It is a great place for students to do their homework the company of friends. When the Centre’s food service is in operation, there will be excellent coffee to sip and offerings from an innovative menu. The Centre’s excellent chess library, as well as its books on other subjects, are available for use by all members.

The above article is written by Y.Bhg. Dato’ Tan Chin Nam, who created the Dato’ Arthur Tan Chess Centre, as a living, thriving memorial of his beloved late son Dato’ Arthur Tan Boon Shih (1960 – 2004). Y.Bhg. Over the years until today, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Tan has donated over RM10 million to chess promotion, ranging from sponsoring major international tournaments, to spending a steady RM100,000/= a year over a couple of decades to support chess development in Malaysia.
