Celebration of my 16 years 8 months as the full-time volunteer elected Secretary of OCM.

In early November 1992, the late Mr. Thong Poh Nyen, informed me that he would be retiring after serving 31 years as the Honorary Secretary of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM),and would not be seeking re-election at the coming Biennial General Meeting of OCM. Since I had been assisting him for quite some time, he asked me to take over his post as the Honorary Secretary of OCM.

Thus on 28th November 1992, at the 15th Biennial General Meeting of OCM, I was returned unopposed as the Honorary Secretary of OCM, succeeding the late Mr. Thong Poh Nyen. On 28th July 2009, I have served OCM as the full-time volunteer elected Honorary Secretary for exactly 16 years 8 months, which is a milestone for me.

Many would wonder the reason for me to celebrate 16 years 8 months as the Honorary Secretary of OCM, when the usual celebration is on the 20th Anniversary. The reason for this is that when I was elected the Honorary Secretary of OCM, I decided that in order to fulfill my responsibility to the best of my ability and capabilty, I would have to be full-time and not be part-time as my predecessors. At that time, I was 54 years old and had taken optional retirement from government service on 31st December 1990, after serving the Drainage & Irrigation Department for 28 years. When I retired, I was offered to work by Engineering consultants firms and indeed, in 1991 and early 1992, I did do some part time assignments with a couple of consultants.

On assuming the post of full-time Honorary Secretary of OCM, I could not take on any more outside work. Nevertheless, I decided to give myself an opportunity cost of RM5,000/= per month, which was about half of what I was drawing working in Engineering consultant firms.

From 28th November 1992 to 28th July 2009, I have served OCM for exactly 200 months. Based on the opportunity cost of RM5,000/= per month, by 28th July 2009, I would have contributed RM1.0 million of service to OCM. Many people are not aware that all the elected Office Bearers of OCM are volunteers and do not draw any honorarium or allowance from OCM. However, our contributions and services do have a value. As such, I would also wish to point out that all my colleagues Office Bearers of OCM, have contributed, just as much, if not more, to OCM.

The intention of writing this article is to share with my friends and colleagues, my personal satisfaction and happiness in achieving a certain target and milestone in my life serving OCM.

(The above article is written by Dato’ Sueh Kok Chi about himself).
