Malaysians in Sports: this Week's Highlights

World Athletics Championships in Berlin:Our very own Roslinda Samsu was in action in Womens Pole Vault, where she qualified on merit at 4.35m.She attempted to break her own record at 4.40m.

Did any of you see Usain Bolt break the 100m World Record of 9.69sec he set at Beijing Olympics 2008?He did an electrying race at 9.58sec,shaving 0.11sec off his own time.

Russian Isibayev was beaten in grand fashion in Women's Pole Vault,an event where she was hot favorite and has broken her own record more than 20 times.

Over at Macau Open GP Gold Badminton,Lee Chong Wei and Chong Wei Feng and others cleared their first round hurdles. There are many who said Chong Wei should have been given a break after the debacle at World Champs.

At Asian Cycling Championships in Kalimantan,Indonesia, our cyclists Azizul HasniAwang,Mohd Edrus Yunus and Rizal Tisin did us proud by winning Gold Medal in Men Team Sprint Final. Azizul also won Gold in 200m Sprint Final. I strongly believe Rizal Tisin will be strong contender for World Cycling Champisonships.

Over at ASEAN Paralympic Games in National Stadium,Bukit Jalil,Malaysia has won more than 50 gold medals, second to Thailand who is a runaway leader in the medal tally. 980 athletes are taking part in the competition.

Go to www.aseanparagameskl09.org.my for the latest results.I did catch a quick glimpse of badminton semifinal action at Stadium Juara,Kompleks Sukan Bukit Kiara. However,I missed the table tennis action at Wisma OCM. Bravo...

World Badminton Champs in Hyderabad that was concluded last week.Although Lee Chong Wei lost in Quarterfinal and our KooKien Kiat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Zakry-Mohd Fairuzizuan lost in semis,I was entertained by the exlosive action in Men Doubles Final Match where Lee Yong Dae-Jung Jae Sung lost a close encounter to Cai Yun-Fu Hai Feng. The rubber set went to 28-26...which is just shorter than when Wong Mew Choo lost to Lu Lan in Beijing Olympics last year (30-28).

UCI World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Moscow:our boy Adiq Hussaini Othman won the first medal for Malaysia.

This Sat 22 to 24 Aug drop by Stadium Badminton Cheras KL for the Da Ma Cai National Wushu Champs. This will coincide with start of Puasa Month and School Holidays.

Next week for badminton enthusiasts, our shuttlers will slug it out at Yonex Taipei Gold GP Badminton.

Have a good and productive week ahead.
