A Day Of Mixed Fortune For Malaysian Shuttlers


HYDERABAD, Aug 11  It was a day of mixed fortune for Malaysian shuttlers on the second day of the Yonex-Sunrise World Badminton Championship Tuesday.

Twelfth seeded Wong Choong Hann cheered up the dull Malaysian camp by nudging out Finland's Ville Lang 21-7, 21-10 without much effort.

"I played well today and this was the second time I was playing against him (Lang). I felt comfortable playing, comparing to my previous encounter. I hope to reach the semi-finals," Choon Hann told reporters after the game.

In the women's singles, Lydia Cheah Li Ya was no match for Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, and was thrashed 6-21, 18-21.

In the women's doubles, Chew Yen Fong-Mooi Hing Yau won after Switzerland's Jeanine Cicognini-Sabrina Jaquet gave a walkover.

In the mixed doubles, Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat/Ng Hui Lin defeated Hsieh Yu Hsing /Chien Yu Chin of Chinese Taipei 21-15, 21-14 and in a subsequent match, went on to beat Netherland's Ruud Bosch/Paulien Van Dooremalen 21-19, 21-14.

In another mixed doubles match, Ong Jien Guo-Chong Chin Sook lost to Chinese pair Hanbin He-Yang Fu 11-21, 20-22.

In the men's doubles, Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato ousted Chan Chong Ming/Chew Choon Eng 18-21, 21-15, 21-16.

In the men's singles, fourth seeded Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat had an easy day defeating Swiss shuttler Christian Boesiger 21-14, 21-14.

He now joins other top singles players who made it to the second round -- China's Lin Dan, Denmark's Peter Hoeg Gade and world champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei.
