Chong Wei, Two Men's Doubles Pairs Stay In The Hunt

HYDERABAD, Aug 13  Men's singles world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei and two men's doubles pairs continued their march in the Yonek Sunrise World Badminton Championships while women's world number one doubles pair Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui were shown the exit here Thursday.

Chong Wei, the top seed here vanquished Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh 21-13, 21-17 in a third round match to set up a date with Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in the quarter-finals tomorrow.

"My opponent played aggressively but I just focused on my game. I was under pressure in the second set because I was not so confident as I lost to him before (in Singapore Open)," said Chong Wei.

However, in another third round singles match, China's Chen Jin, seeded second here dashed Wong Choon Hann's hopes in the championship with a 21-12, 21-7 win.

In the men's doubles, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari made it into their first World Championships quarter-finals after easily disposing Indonesia's Yonathan Suryatama Dasuk-Rian Sukmawan in straight sets 21-14, 21-7 and meet South Korea's Cho Gun Woo-Yoo Yeon Seong.

Second-seeded pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong also lived up to expectations by crushing Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato 21-14, 21-17 to set up a mouth-watering clash against 2005 World champions Howard Bach-Tony Gunawan in the quarter-finals.

But while the men's pairs were enjoying success, Pei Tty-Eei Hui suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Japan's Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna in three sets, 21-19, 19-21, 12-21.

"We did not play well today. We had prepared for the tough match but were not able to kill them off and lost our patience. We did not enjoy the game and disappointed over the loss," Pei Tty told reporters after the game.
