News Items

OCA Sports Committee Meeting 2009 

The OCA Sports Committee meeting was held at the Swissotel, Singapore on 29th June 2009, Singapore. Dato’ Sieh Kok Chi attended the meeting as a member of the Committee. The calendar of Asian Games under OCA from 2011 to 2020 were decided as follows:

2011 – Asian Winter Games in Astana-Almarty, Kazakhstan 
2012 – 3rd Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China.
2013 – 2nd Asian Youth Games in Incheon, Korea.
Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in Doha, Qatar.
2014 – 17th Asian Games Incheon, Korea.
2015 – 4th Asian Beach Games. Host not yet decided.
2016 – Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games. Host not yet decided.
2017 – Asian Winter Games. Host not yet decided. 
Asian Youth Games. Host not yet decided. 
2018 – Asian Beach Games. Host not yet decided. 
2019 – Asian Games. Host not yet decided.
2020 – Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games. Host not yet decided.

The main change is that after the 17th Asian Games 2014 in Incheon, the 18th Asian Games will be held in 2019, the odd year preceding the 2020 Olympic Games.
The Committee also decided that for the Asian Games, there shall be 38 sports, with 28 sports which are in the Olympic Games programme and another 10 sports which are not in the Olympic Games programme.

These 38 sports will not feature in other Asian Games, such as the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games and the Beach Games, although the disciplines and events of the 38 sports are included in the list of sports for the above two Games. 

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Wei Jizhong, the long serving Chairman announced his retirement as Chairman of the Committee. The new Chairman is Mr. Zhang Jilong of China. 

28th OCA General Assembly 2009 

The 28th OCA General Assembly was held at the Swissotel, Singapore on 3st July 2009. Cik Low 
Beng Choo, Vice President of OCM and Dato’ Sieh Kok Chi, Hon. Secretary of OCM, attended the General Assembly. The 28th General Assembly was opened by the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Hon. Admiral Teo Chee Hean, who is also the President of the Singapore National Olympic Council and chaired by H.H. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.

The General Assembly received and approved all the reports presented by the Regional Vice Presidents, the Vice Presidents, representing the Organizing Committee of the various Asian Games and the Chairman of the Committees of OCA. The General Assembly also received reports from Olympic Solidarity, the London 2012 Olympic Games Organizing Committee, the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games Organizing Committee and the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee.

The 29th OCA General Assembly will be held in Guangzhou during the 16th Asian Games in November 2010.

International Aikido Seminar 2009 

The International Aikido Seminar was successfully organized by the Malaysia Aikido Association from 2nd to 5th July 2009 at OCM Arena Sukan, 3rd Floor, OCM Indoor Sports Complex, Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur. The Opening Ceremony of the Seminar was officiated on 2nd July 2009 by Y.Bhg. Dato’ Seri Kee Yong Wee, Hon. Treasurer of OCM. 

The Instructors of the International Aikido Seminar include Aikido Master, Mr Seiichi Sugano (8th Dan), 5 Japanese Instructors of 7th Dan rank and 3 other Instructors from Australia and Singapore of 6th Dan rank. Over 80 participants from Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Europe and South East Asia, and over 120 local participants have so far registered for the Seminar.

As part of its 15th Anniversary Celebrations, the Malaysia Aikido Association successfully organised its 15th Anniversary Celebration Dinner on 4th July 2009, at Phoenix Ballroom, Level 5, Pearl International Hotel, Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur.

Congratulations to the Malaysia Aikido Association for its 15th Anniversary and for successfully conducting all its celebration events. Aikido is one of the few sports without competitions. The Founder of Aikido, O’Sensei Morihei Ueshiba (1883 – 1969) spoke of Aikido as follows:

“The totally awakened warrior can freely utilize all elements contained in heaven and earth. 
The true warrior learns how to correctly perceive the activity of the universe and how to transform martial arts techniques in vehicles of purity, goodness and beauty.” 

Sports Calendar 2010

The Astro Arena TV Sports Channel is proposed to be launched sometime towards the end of 2009. In order to ensure the success of Astro Arena, all National Sports Associations are requested to submit their 2010 Calendar of their sports competitions and championships to OCM by 15th July 2009. The Sports Calendar and its importance to Astro Arena, will be discussed at the 9th OCM Annual Events Seminar to be held on 25th July 2009 at Wisma OCM, immediately after the 153rd OCM Council Meeting.

2009 McDonald’s Olympic Day Run 

A Media launch was held on 27th May 2009 at the OCM Museum and Hall of Fame to announce details of the 2009 McDonald’s Olympic Day Run to be held on 12th July 2009 at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, from 7.30 a.m. 

The Olympic Day Run is open to 5,000 participants from 10 categories and these are:-

• Men’s and Women’s Open 18 years old and above – 7Km
• Men’s and Women’s Veteran 40 years old and above – 7km
• Men’s and Women’s Junior 13 – 17 years old – 7km
• Primary School Boys and School Girls 10 – 12 years old – 3km
• Primary School Boys and School Girls 7 – 9 years old – 3Km

The registration fee charge for adult is RM10.00 and school children without getting their school stamp. For school children who has obtained their school permission to enter the run will be charged RM5.00.

The registration forms are available at Federal Territory Athletic Amateur Association Office, Olympic Council of Malaysia office and website www.olympic.org.my and Mcdonalds outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and website at www.mcdonalds.com.my.
