Happy Birthday to Y.Bhg. Dato’ Zolkples Embong

Y.Bhg. Dato’ Zolkples Embong, Director General, of the National Sports Council Malaysia, was born on 1st March 1959. The Office Bearers and members of the Olympic Council of Malaysia would like to wish him a Happy 50th Birthday and all the best in the future.

Advanced Sports Management Course (ASMC) 2009 – Towards Quality Management of Olympic Sport Organisations

The first session of the Advanced Sports Management Course was successfully conducted from 26th February 2009 to 1st March 2009. Of the 32 candidates who were selected, 27 reported for the Course. Out of the 27 participants, 5 were women. The 27 participants were from various backgrounds, varying from Office Bearers, General Managers and executives of National and State Sports Associations, company directors, university lecturers, volunteer officials of sports clubs, etc. The breakdown of the participants is as follows: National Sports Associations 5, State Sports Associations 4, Government sports councils 5, Education sector 4, Clubs 4, Sports Organisations 3 and private sector 2.

Some of the sports personalities who are participating in the ASMC are Encik Wan Yew Leong, former President of Pacesetters Athletic Club Malaysia, Encik Andrew Gopal, the President of the Ulu Klang Recreation Club, Lt. Cdr. (R) Kamaruzaman Kadir, Acting Secretary General of the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation, Encik Mohd Afendy Abdullah, General Manager of Malaysian Yachting Association, Encik Suhardi Alias of the National Sports Council Malaysia, Encik Wong Tong Hee, General Manager of Malaysia Volleyball Association and many others.

As this is the second time the course is being organized, the Programme Directors, Ms. Moira Tan and Mr. Aloysius Lee used the experience from the first course, to improve the organization of the second course. A few participants from the first course were appointed as adjunct facilitators for the second course. As they were last year’s participants, they could relate to the participants better and provided much assistance and information to the participants.

The 27 participants bonded well, and actively participated and interacted well with each other in the group discussions and activities, feedback sessions during the four days. All the participants agreed that the sessions were interesting with the facilitators motivating them to actively contribute their views and experiences. Some, who thought that they were going to attend lectures, were pleasantly surprised by the interactive learning process between the programme directors, facilitators and participants. The conclusion of the participants was that they could learn faster and more effectively from and with each other and at the same time have fun.

Ms. Ler Hui Yin, a lecturer of TAR college has the following to say: “ASMC is an unique course for me. As a new, young lecturer, I learned a lot in terms of knowledge, experiences throughout the course. Experienced programme directors, facilitators, excellent participants from different fields. This session was full of fun. I really appreciate the effort which is done by OCM and IOC Solidarity. I am looking forward to the coming sessions. Hopefully more views, thoughts and experiences can be exchanged throughout the coming sessions.”

Mr. C. Ravichandran, Senior Assistant, Sekolah Menegah Rawang and Ms Malini Rajasegaran of Malaysian Paralympic Council commented as follows:

“Being participants attending sport science courses at degree and master levels, we found this Advance Sports Management Course is different from other courses that we had attended. The following is the list of our observations from these 4 days course:

1. There is all the time theory in most of the courses I attended and this is the first time I am exposed to a training session.
2. Fantastic facilitators who know the subject matters very well and have a vast experience especially in training knowledge.
3. Two ways communication exist
4. Various number of participants from different organizations
5. Expose to a better interaction
6. Learn plenty of knowledge on issues of each and every organization and problem solving
7.Open book test and presentation cater better understanding of each chapter.”

Special Incentive Award to World Women’s Squash Champion Y.Bhg. Dato’ Nicol Ann David

Malaysia’s reigning World Women Squash Champion, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Nicol Ann David, will be in Kuala Lumpur to defend her KL – CIMB Open Squash Title from 2nd to 4th March 2009 at National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil and from 5th to 7th March 2009 at Berjaya Times Square.
The Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, Y.B. Dato’ Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will be presenting Y.Bhg. Dato’ Nicole Ann David a Special Incentive Award, in recognition of Y.Bhg. Dato’ Nicole David winning ten international women’s squash championships in 2008 and for being ranked first in the World. The presentation will be on 4th March 2009 at 1.00 p.m. at Dewan Perdana, Institut Sukan Negara Malaysia, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

The Royal Selangor Club will be presenting an Honorary Membership to Y.Bhg. Dato’ Nicole Ann David in appreciation of her outstanding performances in the World Squash arena. The presentation will be at a Sport’s Night to be held at the Ballroom of the Royal Selangor Club, Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur at 7.30 p.m. on 8th March 2009.

Mini Olympics

The National Sports Council Malaysia (NSC), together the Olympic Council of Malaysia and the National Sports Associations (NSAs) of Archery, Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Cycling, Gymnastics, Shooting and Weightlifting, have agreed to organize the First Mini Olympics in June 2009. The principles behind the First Mini Olympics are as follows:

-be confined to the above eight individual Olympic sports;
-have a different format from the National Championships of the above 8 sports;
-competitions will not be state based, but will be for all athletes who have met the qualifying standards to be established by the NSAs of the above 8 sports;
-it will be low cost with no frills;
-most of the competitions of the Mini Olympics will be held in sports facilities in the National Sports Complex, Bukit Jalil, except for those sports whose facilities are located outside Bukit Jalil;
-to reduce cost, the technical officials, should as far as possible be from Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley;
-NSC will bear all the cost for the organization of the Mini Olympics, including the cost of the athletes, officials and technical officials;
-NSC will continue to support the NSAs of the above 8 sports in the organization of their annual national championships.
-the Mini Olympics will be held biennially.
