2009 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia – Press Release by MIHF

The Malaysia Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF) held its media conference on 21st February 2009 at the Fig & Olive Restaurant, Sunway Pyramid. Y.Bhg. Dato’ Lee Hwa Beng, President of MIHF stated that the purpose of the media conference was to inform the media of the participation of the Malaysian Ice Hockey team in the 2nd IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia 2009 and to introduce the members of the team and some sponsors of the MIHF. The media release is as shown below.

The “2009 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia,” (CCOA) tournament to be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE from 13 – 22 March is sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The governing body of international hockey has been instrumental in helping to develop ice hockey in non-winter countries. Their continuous support has ensured the growth of ice hockey in Asia. This is the second tournament of this calibre for non-winter countries in the Asian region. The countries participating in this year’s tournament are Malaysia, UAE, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Thailand, Macau and Mongolia.

The Malaysian men’s national ice hockey team took part in the inaugural 2008 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia in Hong Kong. The national team took home the silver medal, with wins against Hong Kong, Singapore and Macau, a tie with Thailand and a loss against Chinese-Taipei. Malaysian player Loke Ban Kin was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and also the best player of the Malaysian team.

Malaysia had the privilege to play in the Asian Winter Games in Changchun, China, in 2007 whereby the team adjusted to a higher level of play and fared better than expected. The 2009 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia tournament will be part of the preparation for the next Asian Winter Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2011. With careful planning and a well-rounded training schedule, the Malaysian team will be better equipped to face the challenges of the upcoming 2011 Asian Winter Games.

Ice Hockey is a thriving new sport in Malaysia with significant opportunities for growth amongst youths and adults. Many current local ice hockey players got their start when Malaysia hosted the World Ice Hockey 5’s in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2006. The matches attracted the attention of the younger generation, and some have since progressed to be solid ice hockey players.

Besides promoting a healthy lifestyle, ice hockey tournaments such as this also will ensure the sport’s growth and continued publicity. On top of that, players also will be able to keep up with the competitive level of the sport around the region.
Institut Sukan Negara (ISN), Dexion Asia, SportsPlanet, Dargon-i, Canton-i, Mammoth Expire Holdings and Sunway Pyramid have all stepped up to help the team achieve their goal. Etihad Airways being the official airline and Star Metro the media sponsor will play an integral part in aiding the national team. With the corporate support, the players are able to channel their focus on their training. It also fuels the players’ motivation as they strive to meet the challenge. We are encouraged that these companies have set the tone for corporate social responsibility and hope our partnerships will open doors to more endeavours. Singapore Youth Olympic team turned down the MHF’s invitation as they are in the midst of selection for their national team, but they agree to have an annual game with the Malaysia team after the MAHL in August.

With the successful organization of the last three leagues since 2006, MHF has identified many talented handball players to compete at international level if MSN can approve our training program for both men and women teams and for more international participations.

In conjunction to the league, Asia Handball Federation (AHF) is offering Malaysia to conduct a referee course during the league. Some participants may come from Asia and South East Asia countries. This is an honour for Malaysia to promote this Olympic sport to all Asian Handball member Countries. The main sponsors of the 4th National Handball League are MILO and MOLTEN.
